Clear Skies and Solar Spectacles: Public Solar Viewing, 17 August 2024

We had another hugely successful solar viewing session on Saturday 17th August, with around 650 visitors taking the opportunity to observe the Sun through our specialised equipment.

The skies were perfectly clear for most of the session, with just a slight high haze appearing late in the day - but not enough to spoil the spectacular views.

The Sun truly put on a show, treating us to an impressive array of sunspots, including the very large sunspot group AR3784. In addition to the sunspots, we were able to observe multiple prominences around the solar disc.

Visitors enjoyed viewing the Sun through our H-Alpha solar telescope, which offered detailed views of solar prominences and filaments. The Sunspotter projector and smart telescopes also provided detailed views of sunspots.

As ever, a huge thank you to all our volunteers - Matthew, Philip, Eddie, Tej, Clive, Yvonne, John, Bobby, Mike, Tony, Tim, and Richard.

We’re looking forward to our next session, scheduled for either Friday 23rd August, or Saturday 24th August (weather permitting). We hope to see you there!
